Why Do Women Get Brain Fog?

A woman in her late 40s I know is really struggling to think clearly, remember what she is doing, and even come up with the words she is trying to say. She literally feels like she is getting dementia at middle age. At the same time she is experiencing night sweats and hot flashes. This is making everyday life and work very difficult. For some women one of their only symptoms of menopause is brain fog which can be very distressing.

As estrogen levels fluctuate and decrease in the perimenopause/menopause change the many estrogen receptors in our brain responsible for activities such as learning, focus and memory are left empty at times and we can struggle to do things that used to come naturally.

Sometimes, the insomnia, night sweats and loss of sleep caused by perimenopause and menopause worsen the effects on your already struggling brain.

Fortunately, for most women, these symptoms do improve later in menopause. That said, a healthy lifestyle including exercise, a healthy diet, good sleep hygiene, socializing and brain exercises keep your brain at its healthiest. For most, estrogen replacement will dramatically improve these symptoms. It is a balance of all of the above that make for your best midlife menopausal change.

Brain fog is just one of many (peri)menopausal symptoms. A healthy lifestyle and, if desired, menopausal hormone therapy, can help make the menopause transition and post-menopause your best stages of life. At Dragonfly Menopause Care I would love to help you live your healthiest life and feel your best!
